I love the Alder Tree. There is a stand of 10 of them along part of the track I walk each morning with our dog, Jedi.
I love the tiny cones.
I especially love that at this time of year - autumn - these beautiful trees shed their leaves, unlike our evergreen natives. Along the twigs there are last years cones, wooded, browned and open, a Years growth further along the twigs is found the beginnings of leaf nodes, where the spring leaves will unfurle from and further still along the twig is a cluster of the next years cones.
Green still and with a beautiful weaved pattern on them.
When I was a child my Granmother called these lambs tails.
We would collect the wooded cones for crafts and leave the lambs tails for next years crafts.
It fascinates me that the whole life cycle of this tree can be seen in one glimpse.
There is a story here... purhaps it will become clear in the middle of the night 😂
Some of you have asked about my Materials on Instagram.
Paints - my favourites are Winsor & Newton - these are reliable and traditional
my other favourites are Qor Paints by Golden. These have really amazing intense pigments which burst into a wet on wet page! They are such fun!
